Stowey

Most rescues we contacted were skeptical about our suitability as a potential JRT family. We live in a small New England city, we have two children, my husband and I both work. On the exterior we didn't seem like good candidates for an adoption of one of these feisty little fellas. But good fortune prevailed and we finally found our Jack Russell - an 8yr. old chap by the name of Stowey, who was entered into rescue with Sue Porter, of East Haddam, CT. At first we were skeptical about adopting an older dog, but after meeting with him, he proved to be just the guy we were looking for. His previous owner had been a little old man that had just recently died and Stowey was looking for a family to bond with. He is good with children and other dogs (criteria I was looking for and wasn't expecting to find - I had prepared everyone by telling them that we were getting a Tasmanian devil on a leash!). Imagine everyone's astonishment when they finally met Stowey. He's a mild mannered little gentleman that has won over many in his path so far.

Don't get me wrong - he exhibits true Jack behavior when he gets out in our big park across the street from our house and starts coursing back and forth, nose to the ground, intent on a scent, treeing squirrels as far as his EXTENDA leash will allow, trebling and growling all the way. Just this past weekend he enamored himself to my riding buddies by taking on the resident rat population at our horse barn that we have been battling all summer. I don't see the infestation problem as an issue any more after Stowey flushed them out! He is a credit to his breed, that Stowey! Parson Russell would be proud!

I'm lucky to be able to take him to work with me each day and he's content to trot along at ankle site as I go about my job as a director of a continuing education center for an area university. Stowey's easy going disposition has earned him the title of Center Mascot already - a title he uses to his advantage when there are end of semester parties going on room to room. He gets invited to all of them and when I couldn't locate him one night, a student stopped to tell me he was in the Psychology Department having pizza! Suffice to say, he feels like he's been with us forever and hopefully - that's the way it will stay! You can teach an old dog new tricks - or maybe he's teaching us!
